FSU’s Bowden Winningest Coach After NCAA Sanctions Penn State

When the NCAA announced the sanctions against Penn State earlier today, late coach Joe Paterno was docked 111 wins, vacated between 1998 and 2011, which removes Paterno as the all-time winningest coach in Division I football coach and reduces Penn State's all-time wins total to now stand outside the top 10 winningest programs of all-time.

Paterno stands eighth on the all-time wins list with 298 and fifth among FBS coaches.

Florida State’s Bobby Bowden is now recognized as the FBS' all-time wins leader with 377 victories. Behind Bowden is Bear Bryant with 323, Pop Warner with 319 and Amos Alonzo Stagg with 314. None are likely to rise from the grave to challenge the retired former Seminole coach.

NCAA President Mark Emmert announced sanctions against Penn State University's football program Monday morning in light of the Jerry Sandusky sex abuse scandal and the findings of the Freeh Report investigation.

The details of the punishment:

• ·         Four year postseason ban
• ·         10 initial scholarship losses and 20 per year for four years
• ·         $60 million fine
• ·         All wins from 1998-2011 vacated
• ·         Five year probationary period

The NCAA's action in a case like this is unprecedented, as this was a legal issue -- there was no NCAA investigation. Emmert called this a "very distinct and very unique circumstance." And while the NCAA didn't invoke the death penalty like was given to SMU 25 years ago, it's a crippling blow to the program. Under former coach Joe Paterno, the team's most consecutive seasons without a bowl appearance was three. (You can read the entire list of sanctions from the NCAA here.)

Emmert said all current Penn State players who are eligibile are cleared to transfer to other Division I programs without having to sit out one season as per usual transfer rules. The NCAA will consider waiving scholarship maximums for schools who accept Penn State transfers.
