| (Kyle Green for USAT) |
Beamer was born in Mount Airy, North
Carolina, grew up in Fancy Gap, Virginia (and, no, we don’t know where that is),
went to high school in Hillsville, Virginia, and earned 11 varsity letters in
high school as a three-sport athlete in football, basketball, and baseball.
He attended Virginia Tech and was a
starting cornerback for three years on the football team, playing in the 1966
and 1968 Liberty Bowls. He graduated in 1969 and attended Radford University
for graduate school while serving as an assistant football coach at Radford
High School.
From 1981 to 1986 he was the head
coach of the Murray State Racers before heading to Blacksburg. He also coached
at Maryland and The Citadel.
Beamer’s first winning season was in
1989 when the Hokies went 6-4-1 and his last losing season was in 1992 (2-8-1)
the year before Virginia Tech’s bowl run started in 1993 and continued through
the 2011 season. Under Beamer, the
Hokies have won six ACC titles and never finished worse than second in their division.
