The song was originally released in the United Kingdom where
it peaked at #17. It was released in the
U.S. in 1964 where it became a #1 hit.
The song played no role in “Beatlemania” which launched in 1963 with She
Loves You and I Want To Hold Your Hand along with several appearances on the Ed
Sullivan Show.
Over in a slightly parallel universe, the Rolling Stones had
released their first single (a cover of Chuck Berry’s Come On) in July of the
same year. According to Keith Richards in his recent book, eventually the
Stones Keith and Mick Jagger) and the Beatles (John Lennon) would discuss when
to release singles so as not to compete with one another…
