Video Of The Day

This really needs no introduction, just sit back and enjoy a little over six minutes of why America is a great country. This makes up for all the wackos who are trying to change the Paul Revere Wikipedia page to match the Ex-Governor of Alaska of Whom We Will No Longer Speak's version of history which makes we Americans look like morons and idiots.  You know, like a country full of people who are governed by married Congressmen who tweet their junk and flirt anonymously with strangers (women, as far as we know) on the Internet...Wait a minute...THAT'S IS US!

And, unfortunately, so is this...

Four ACC Baseball Players Are MLB First Round Choices

Danny Hultzen (center)
Four ACC baseball players were first-round selections in the 2011 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft, which got under way Monday night in New York.

Two-time ACC Pitcher of the Year Danny Hultzen was taken as the second overall pick by the Seattle Mariners. Hultzen joined former North Carolina standout Dustin Ackley (2009) as the second ACC player in three years to be taken by the Mariners as the No. 2 overall pick. Hultzen's overall selection was the highest ever for a Virginia player.

Second-team All-ACC pitcher Jed Bradley went to the Milwaukee Brewers as the No. 15 overall selection. First-team selection Sean Gilmartin of Florida State, the current career leader in wins among active ACC pitchers, went to the Atlanta Braves as the No. 28 pick. North Carolina shortstop Levi Michael was the fourth ACC player taken, going 30th overall to the Minnesota Twins.

This marks the 20th consecutive year (1992-2011) that at least one student-athlete from an ACC program has been taken in the first round of the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft. It is the 10th time in the last 11 years that conference has seen multiple players taken in the first round.

Saturday ACC NCAA Baseball

Steven Proscia (AP)
VIRGINIA 10, St. John’s 2 – The Wahoos (51-9) , the No. 1 national seed, tied the school record with their 51st win of the season in front of a record crowd of 5.050.  UVa advances to the regional championship game at 6 p.m. Sunday. St. John's and East Carolina will play an elimination game at 1 p.m. Sunday to determine the Cavaliers' opponent.

Danny Hultzen picked up the win for Virginia, striking out 12 batters while allowing one run on three hits in seven innings of work. Hultzen, who improved to 11-3 this season, set a new school record with 148 strikeouts this season, breaking the record of 146 set by Tim Burcham in 1985.

FLORIDA STATE 9, Alabama 5 – Sparked by a four-run sixth inning, the No. 5 national seed Florida State baseball team defeated Alabama 9-5 Saturday night in the winner's bracket of the NCAA Tallahassee Regional.

The Seminoles (44-17) will now face the winner of Sunday's noon elimination game between the Crimson Tide (34-27) and UCF (39-22) at 6 p.m. The Knights sent Bethune-Cookman home earlier in the day at Dick Howser Stadium.

All-American Sean Gilmartin earned the win for FSU, throwing seven innings while allowing five earned runs and 12 hits. He also struck out six.

N.C. STATE 5, Georgia Southern 2 – With the victory, NC State improved to 35-26 overall and survived to face the loser of Saturday's 7 p.m. game between South Carolina and Stetson. The Wolfpack will play at 1 p.m. Sunday.

"A lot of people told me when we came down here that this was the toughest regional in the country," Wolfpack coach Elliott Avent said. "I think all regionals are tough, so I hate to use that word. I certainly see what people are talking about. [Georgia Southern] might be a four seed, but that's one of the toughest teams we've played all year. That's a tough, well-coached team with tough, hard-nosed players.”

GEORGIA TECH 6, Southern Miss 2 – The win pairs the Jackets (41-20) with the loser of tonight's matchup between No. 4 seed Austin Peay and No. 3 seed Mississippi State at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday. With the loss Southern Miss (39-18) is eliminated from the NCAA Tournament.

Tech's Jed Bradley threw seven shutout innings before the Eagles plated two runs in the top of the eighth, snapping their 32 inning scoreless streak. Bradley allowed eight hits and struck out four while improving to 7-3 on the season.

NORTH CAROLINA 14, JMU 0 - Patrick Johnson scattered three hits over eight innings to lead the Tar Heels to their second straight shutout, a 14-0 rout of James Madison on Saturday night at the Chapel Hill Regional.

Johnson (12-1) struck out 11 _ one shy of a career high _ and shut down the highest-scoring offense in Division I to win his sixth straight decision. Greg Holt homered and drove in four runs, and Ben Bunting finished with three RBIs for the Tar Heels (47-14), who broke the game open with seven runs in the seventh inning.

North Carolina hasn't been scored upon in the regional, improved to 14-0 in home NCAA tournament games since 2006 and moved a win away from its fifth super regional appearance in six years.

CLEMSON 12, Coastal Carolina 7 –  Richie Shaffer, Will Lamb, and John Hinson all hit home runs to lead #12 Clemson to a 12-7 victory over #21 Coastal Carolina in the Clemson Regional in front of 5,408 fans at Doug Kingsmore Stadium on Saturday night. The Tigers, who moved to 2-0 in the Clemson Regional, improved to 43-18 on the season. The Chanticleers, who fell to 1-1 in the Clemson Regional, dropped to 42-19 in 2011.

David Haselden (6-1), the second of three Tiger pitchers, earned the win. He allowed five hits, two runs, and no walks with two strikeouts in 4.0 innings pitched.

Florida 5, MIAMI 4 – The University of Miami got out to an early lead, made a highlight defensive play and received several strong individual performances, but all that was not enough as the Canes dropped a pressure-packed regional game to the University of Florida, 5-4, on Saturday evening at McKethan Stadium.

The loss puts the No. 2 seed Hurricanes (37-22) in the loser's bracket of the draw, needing three wins over the next two days to advance to the Super Regionals. Miami faces No. 3 seed Jacksonville in an elimination game on Sunday at Noon. Jim Morris has announced that freshman Bryan Radziewski (9-2) will make the start on the mound for the Hurricanes. The winner of the game will play No. 1 seed and No. 2 national seed Florida (47-16) at 4 p.m.

Heartbreak occurred once again for Miami in Gainesville on Saturday, as the Canes have now dropped seven-consecutive games to the Gators, and ten of the last eleven ballgames.

Things That Make You Go…

Hmmm…

Kind of a slow news time here at T.A.H. Worldwide Media LLC headquarters.  NCAA baseball, NBA playoffs, some sport called hockey, no Triple Crown in horseracing…Not much to inspire publication.

That said, we need to get our series moving forward again on The Streak where we put the Clemson basketball losing streak in Chapel Hill in historic perspective.

And speaking of history, yesterday via Facebook and a friend in Lexington, KY (die hard UK fan), we learned that the American Revolution and ultimately Paul Revere’s historic ride was really about gun control.

Here’s a tip, loyal readers.  If you go out on tour to jump start your delusional presidential campaign under the guise of celebrating the nation’s history, it’s helpful if you know a little of the history…

Jeez.

We don’t normally talk the Big P (politics) here at T.A.H., but if Palin is ever the leader of the free world, T.A.H. Worldwide Media may be forced to relocate to someplace much less free…with better weather, of course.  Sorry, Canada, too cold.

Or…like Paul Revere (according to Palin), we will ride through the streets of beautiful and historic Warrenton ringing bells and firing shots to warn our fellow citizens that the government is coming to take our guns.

AP NCAA Baseball Round Up

John Hicks
Charlottesville NCAA Regional – VIRGINIA 6, Navy 0 —Will Roberts struck out a career-high 14 in a four-hitter, and Danny Hultzen drove in three runs in No. 1 national seed Virginia’s victory over Navy.

Roberts (11-1) retired the last 17 batters—nine by strikeout—for Virginia (50-9). The junior right-hander, who pitched the eighth nine-inning perfect game in NCAA Division I history on March 29 against George Washington, walked none and improved to 18-1 in his career.

The Cavaliers got a two-run triple from Hultzen—the possible No. 1 draft pick as a pitcher—in the first, RBI singles from Hultzen and Kenny Swab in the third and cruised.

Columbia Regional – Stetson 8, N.C. STATE 7 —Nick Rickles’ RBI single in the bottom of the ninth inning helped Stetson, which earlier trailed by five runs, defeat North Carolina State.

North Carolina State took a 5-0 lead in the third, helped by Harold Riggins’ two-run homer. But Stetson (42-18) came back on Mark Jones’ three-run shot the next inning and then a four-run fifth made it 7-5.

Danny Canela tied it for the Wolfpack (34-26) in the seventh with a two-run homer.

Stetson reliever Jake Boyd (9-1) took over after that. Boyd had six strikeouts in three innings, striking out the side in the ninth to set up Rickles’ walk-off hit.

Wolfpack closer Jeff Overman (6-3) took the loss.

Gainesville Regional – MIAMI 7, Jacksonville 2 —Rony Rodriguez drove in two runs, Corey Janson homered for the first time this season and Miami beat Jacksonville.

Jacksonville (36-23) cut the deficit in half on Daniel Gulbransen’s RBI single in the seventh, but Miami (37-12) answered with four runs—two on bases-loaded walks—to seal the victory.

Steven Ewing (8-2) gave up one hit and one run in six innings for Miami. Matthew Tomshaw (8-4) allowed four hits and two earned runs in seven innings for Jacksonville.

Chapel Hill Regional – NORTH CAROLINA 4, Maine 0 —Kent Emanuel threw eight shutout innings in his NCAA tournament debut, leading North Carolina past Maine.

Jacob Stallings hit a three-run homer as part of a four-run first inning for the Tar Heels (46-14), who managed just three hits after that but advanced to play James Madison on Saturday.

Emanuel (7-1), the first freshman to start North Carolina’s NCAA opener since 2008, struck out five and gave up seven hits before Michael Morin relieved him in the ninth. Emanuel allowed only three Maine baserunners to reach second, and only one made it to third.

Keith Bilodeau (10-3) struck out six and allowed five hits in eight innings, but gave up all four runs for Maine (32-23), which will play Florida International in an elimination game.

Clemson Regional – CLEMSON 11, Sacred Heart 1 —John Hinson hit a three-run homer and Scott Firth (5-1) allowed one run on six hits in six innings for Clemson.

Chris Epps drove in three runs for Clemson (42-18), and Phil Pohl had three hits.

The Pioneers’ Troy Scribner (9-3) was pulled in the Tigers’ six-run third. Sacred Heart (34-22) takes on in-state rival Connecticut in an elimination game, while Clemson will play Coastal Carolina in Saturday’s winner bracket.
The Pioneers scored in the sixth on Dan Perez’s groundout. They squandered a bases-loaded, no-outs opportunity in the fifth when Firth retired two hitters on shallow fly balls and got the final out on a grounder.

Atlanta Regional – Austin Peay 2, GEORGIA TECH 1 – Jack Snodgrass pitched seven strong innings, Jordan Hankins hit a go-ahead home run in the seventh and Austin Peay stunned Georgia Tech.
Zach Toney got four outs to earn his second save for the Governors (34-22).

Matthew Grimes (7-4) replaced Georgia Tech starter Mark Pope, who left with a back injury in the second inning. Grimes gave up three hits, two runs, one walk and struck out eight in 6 2-3 innings for the Yellow Jackets (40-20).

Tallahassee Regional – FLORIDA STATE 6, Bethune-Cookman 5 —Mike McGee hit a tiebreaking single in the bottom of the eighth and Florida State beat Bethune-Cookman.

Parker Brunnelle and Sherman Johnson each drove in two runs for Florida State. Daniel Bennett pitched a 1-2-3 ninth for the save.

Ryan Durrence hit two homers, while Peter O’Brien and DJ Leonard also homered for Bethune-Cookman (36-24).

Roman Lancana (1-1) gave up two singles around an out in the eighth before McGee’s hit against Jordan Dailey put the Seminoles (43-17) on top. Brian Busch (6-2) pitched 2 1-3 innings of relief for Florida State.

Ohio State Hires New Football Coach

This guy is perfect.

Good coaching resume (238–72–10).

He won three National Championships (1954, 1657, 1968) while batting 50% in bowl games (6-6) and he has a pretty good right cross (reporter, player) to boot.

Oh crap! He’s dead.

Damn it.

Quotes Of The Day

John Hicks (r) (Thomas Bynum/Cavalier Daily)
“Our team motto all year has been, ‘Win this pitch, win this at-bat, win this inning.' We try to stay as far away from the big picture as possible.” – UVA catcher John Hicks.

The Cavaliers (49-9) went 4-0 this weekend to win the ACC tournament for the third time. They open against Navy (33-23-1) on Friday afternoon in the double-elimination format. East Carolina (39-19) and St. John’s (35-20) meet in the other game.

A year ago, Virginia advanced through the regional round and hosted a super regional, seeking a second consecutive trip to Omaha and the College World Series. Instead, the Cavaliers lost in three games to Oklahoma and watched a Sooners dogpile celebration on Davenport Field.

“That image of the Oklahoma dogpile, of not making it (to Omaha), that still resonates in everybody’s head,” said pitcher Tyler Wilson (7-0).
