While Duke, North Carolina, Florida State and Clemson are headed to the Big Dance, the Hokies were left out of the NCAA tournament for a fourth consecutive season, once again kept in suspense until the final bid was announced.
Many “bracketologist” had forecast the Hokies to make the tournament after they went 21-11 and advanced to the semifinals of this weekend’s ACC tournament. Tech’s resume included a win over No. 1 seed and ACC tournament champion Duke.
The Hokies also beat Penn State and knocked off Florida State twice, and both the Nittany Lions and Seminoles are in the tournament as No. 10 seeds. But the drought continues for Tech, which has been to just four NCAA tournaments in the last 30 years and only nine in its history.
Duke is the #1 seed in the West while Northe Carolina is the #2 seed in the East which features overall #1 tournament seed Ohio State. Florida State is the #10 seed in the Southwest and Clemson is playing in the new opening round for a #12 seed in the East.
