WAKE FOREST GOES FOR THE EARLY “Z”

Like Duke, Wake Forest now has a coach with an early “z” in his last name. Welcome to the ACC one Jeff Bzdelik.

Like Mike Krzyzewski (Kʂɨˈʐɛ(f)ski), coach of the 2010 NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball National Champion Duke Blue Devils, Bzdelik also hails from Illinois and has had success at a military academy.

He formerly coached the Denver Nuggets in the NBA from 2002 through 2004. There, he is best remembered for leading the 2003-04 Nuggets to a 43–39 record, a 26-game improvement over the 2002-03 campaign when the team went 17–65.

Bzdelik also coached at the Air Force Academy where he led that team to a NIT semi-final game and a total record for two seasons of 50–16. In 2006-077, Bzdelik’s Air Force squad posted the best record in school history going 26-9.

Things didn’t go quite as smoothly in the Big 12 dominated by the likes of Kansas, Texas, Oklahoma and Kansas State. In the last three years, the Buffalos have gone 10-38 in conference and 36-58 overall. This past season, Bzdelik guided the Buffs to a 15-16 record.

The 57-year-old Bzdelik is no stranger to his new employer— his daughter is enrolled at Wake Forest. Think they will deduct her tuition from his million dollar paycheck?
