NATIONAL CHAMPS (AGAIN). North Carolina defeated Maryland in come-from-behind fashion, 3-2, in the 2009 NCAA Field Hockey Championship hosted by Wake Forest University at Kentner Field in Winston-Salem, N.C. earning the school's sixth NCAA field hockey title, and second in the last three seasons.

The Atlantic Coast Conference was guaranteed a national championship with a Tar Heel-Terrapin match-up and it gives the league its 15th national title in field hockey.
