ACC FOOTBALL: PRE-SEASON CRIME – UNC DOING ITS PART TO CONTRIBUTE

For the second time this week, there is crime news coming out of Chapel Hill.

UNC running back Anthony Elzy is due in court on Aug. 24 for a misdemeanor marijuana possession charge, according to Orange County court records.

Elzy, the second-team fullback, was charged on May 22 for possessing less than half of an ounce of marijuana. The junior from Warren, Ohio, has already been disciplined by Tar Heels coach Butch Davis, according to a team spokesman. (Player: Sorry, coach. Coach: Damn it, Elzy, don’t get caught!)

Elzy rushed for 321 yards on 92 carries as a freshman tailback but was moved to fullback with the emergence of Shaun Draughn. He had only three carries for five yards in seven games in 2008. He missed the final six games with a broken scapula. Obviously, that hurt, so he smoked dope.

Elzy is one of three UNC football players who has been arrested since spring practice. Former offensive lineman Kevin Bryant was charged with misdemeanor assault on a female on July 1, and freshman defensive end Donte Paige-Moss was charged with misdemeanor simple assault on July 17. Bryant has since left the team and Paige-Moss has been heckled by T.A.H.
