The Washington Nationals are running out of ways to describe a string of losses that always seem to end the same way—with a meltdown moment from the bullpen. This time it was a wild pitch in the ninth inning – a two-out slider from Joel Hanrahan that bounced before it got to home plate. The Pirates’ Freddy Sanchez scored from third base, the deciding run that gave the Pittsburgh a 2-1 victory Wednesday night.
It was their season-high fifth straight win and the Nationals’ seventh consecutive loss.
If you’re old enough, you will remember how depressing these words are: Washington Senators.
At least they had Frank Howard…

I was at that game last night. It wasn't simply a wild pitch. It was the culmination of eight eight straight crappy pitches of which no less than five "skipped" across the plate. It was just a matter of time before Varlomov, err...Nieves let one by him. Sad....truly sad. The real heart-breaker happened in the bottom of the ninth with two outs when a pinch hitter (Willingham, I think) smacked one to the deepest part of straight-away center to fall short of going out by mere inches.
