CLIFF HAMMONDS IS A ROCKET SCIENTIST

Clemson's Cliff Hammonds (a double major - architecture and psychology), Miami's Jack McClinton, Duke's Greg Paulus and NC State's Ben McCauley highlight the 2008 All-Atlantic Coast Conference Academic Men's Basketball Team, as announced today by Commissioner John Swofford.

No members of the regular season champion Tar Heels hit the books hard enough to make this squad.

To be eligible for consideration, a student-athlete must have earned a 3.00 grade point average for the previous semester and maintained a 3.00 cumulative average during his academic career.

Hammonds is one of only five players in ACC history with at least 1,300 points, 400 assists, 400 rebounds and 200 steals in his career. A four-year starter for the Tigers, Hammonds ranks second in the ACC in assists to turnover ratio (2.27:1), fourth in steals per game (2.0), fourth in minutes played (34.5), seventh in assists per game (3.9) and 10th in three-point field goals per game (2.0).

McClinton, a two-year starter for the Hurricanes, leads the ACC in three-point field goal percentage (.444), free throw percentage (.894) and ranks fifth in scoring (17.2). In addition, McClinton has scored in double figures 20 straight games and leads the team in scoring and assists (2.7).

Paulus has been the starting point guard in all but one game this season for fifth-ranked Duke and is one of five Blue Devils averaging in double-figures. A third-team CoSIDA Academic All-American this year and a three-year starter, Paulus ranks ninth in the ACC in assists (3.5), sixth with 2.34 three-point field goals per game, and is third in assists to turnover ratio (2.17:1).

McCauley, who has started 50 games the past two years, is averaging 6.3 points, 3.7 rebounds and 1.4 assists for the Wolfpack. Rounding out the league's academic honors team are Wake Forest's Gary Clark, Virginia Jerome Meyinsse, Florida State's Matt Zitani and Duke's Brian Zoubek.

Four players - Hammonds, McClinton, McCauley, and Paulus - are repeaters from previous league all-academic teams. Hammonds and McCauley were named to the team for the third time in their careers, while McClinton is a two-time selection.
