CAROLINA WINS BY AN IONA

Well, maybe 3.5 ionas.

Where’s Jeff Ruland when you need him? The Gaels couldn’t find an answer for Tyler Hansbrough as UNC cruised to a 107-72 win. Hansbrough had 27 points while Danny Green scored 15 in the home opener againt Iona (Gaels, 3,111 students, New Rochelle, NY).

Wayne Ellington added 14 for the Tar Heels (2-0), who never trailed and quickly turned the game into a display of the all-around high-speed attack that has made them an early favorite to win the 2008 NCAA Division 1 Men's Basketball National Championship.

Five UNC players scored in double figures.

Carolina's Marcus Ginyard, top, and Iona's De'Shaune Griffin collide during the second half -- we didn't see the game, so we aren't sure what is about to happen here, but De'Shaune is doin' a mean "I can fly" imitation.

(Note: "Iota" is the ninth letter of the Greek alphabet. In the system of Greek numerals it has a value of 10.)
